AI policy
How artificial intelligence is used to prepare articles, and where a person is responsible.
NewDays uses artificial intelligence to prepare its articles. This page explains exactly how, and where a person is responsible.
What AI does
- Searches for and reads published sources about an event.
- Drafts the headline, the article and the summary from those sources.
- Proposes an openly licensed image and records its author and licence.
- Checks whether the story has developed since the event and drafts a dated update where it has.
What a person does
- The editor decides which subjects the site covers.
- The editor can read any draft and approve that exact version, ask for changes, or reject it.
- Nothing is published automatically. Publication requires the editor’s approval of the specific version being published.
- The 50 archive articles the site opened with were approved as one set on the editor’s decision, without a line-by-line read of each article by the editor.
- The editor is responsible for what appears on the site and for corrections.
Limits we set
- AI may not use anything as fact that is not in a source it opened; its general knowledge is not treated as a source.
- No invented quotes, people, interviews or eyewitness accounts.
- No AI-generated images presented as photographs of real events. At launch NewDays uses no AI-generated images at all.
- Instructions found inside web pages or documents are ignored; sources are treated only as information.
Known weaknesses
AI systems can misread a source, merge two facts, or state something with more confidence than the source supports. The source list under each article is there so that anyone can check, and the editor corrects errors that are found, but mistakes can get through. If you spot an error, please use the corrections page.
Labelling
Articles carry no individual bylines, because no individual reporter wrote them. This page and the editorial policy describe how every article on the site is prepared.
